Back in August, my friend, Elke tried to introduce me to some mystery fruit. It was not in season, so, despite our hunt, we never found one to taste. Yesterday, I met my friend, Evelynne as I was getting off the train. She is the head librarian in my favorite library (the Jewish Studies library, which is small enought to be down right cozy. She regularly serves tea and cookies!). Yesterday, she gave me a piece of the mysterious fruit in question. Dream FruitIts Latin name is Annona reticulata and it is also known as: English: Custard Apple, India: ramphal, nona or luvuniSpanish: Anona, chirimoya roia, anona rosada, and anona roja or anona colorada Portuguese: anona de seso. Araticum ape or araticum do mato Where fantasy rules! As you can sort of see, the fruit is about 8 or 9 cm (3-3.5 inches) long. Dutch: kasjoema.Aztec: quaultzapotl,Mayan: tsulimay, tsulilpox, tsulipoxThai: noi nongTagalog: sarikayaIt's native to the West Indies, but is common in Central America and Florida. We also grow them in Israel. In fact, my librarian friend, Evelynne has a tree in her garden. I don't even like most exotic, tropical fruit. Sure, bananas are fine and I like mangos and pineapple. I detest the smell of guava, but I found the anona quite friendly... Such a friendly fruit...The black seeds are poisonous, but so hard that one can injest them with no ill effects. There are reportedly medicinal uses for the fruit (ripe or not), as well as the leaves and the bark of the tree.
