The unilateral Palestinian cease-fire went into effect at 6 a.m. today, and within the first two hours, two different Palestinian groups, Jihad Islami and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President's own group, Abu Rish Brigades,  had already fired three missiles into Israel.

As Gaza Cease-Fire Begins, 4 Rockets Fall In Israel

A cease-fire between Israeli and Palestinian forces in the Gaza Strip went into effect early Sunday morning after an agreement was reached by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud 'Abbas. 'Abbas was able to obtain consent from all of the Palestinian factions to abide by the cease-fire – including a halt to the firing of Qassam rockets – but notably absent from the deal was any reference to captured Israeli soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, whose kidnapping on June 25 triggered major Israeli offensives in Gaza. Olmert had said many times that there cannot be a deal without Shalit's release. Palestinian sources did say over the weekend that Israel had agreed to its demands for the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit. As of press time, the cease-fire appeared to be holding although Israel Radio reported that at least four Qassams had landed in Israel shortly after the cease-fire began.

The dearth of leadership here in the region is staggering.  What do the Palestinians do when groups from within their own ranks violate the cease-fire that they proposed and the Israelis agreed to?  We hear all the squabbling between PM Olmert and Defense Minister Peretz, sex scandals of our President, Katsav and Justice Minister Ramon ~ but we hear nothing of our leadership's efforts to secure the release of Gilad Shalit, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.  Olmert and Peretz agreed to end the Lebanon War on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 1701 without freeing our three kidapped soldiers.  This has given Hizballah the opportunity, with help from Damascus an Tehran, to rearm.  Yesterday, a tunnel between Gaza and Egypt used for smuggling arms, collapsed trapping Palestinians.  About 20 minutes ago, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh announced that all Palestinian factions have now agreed to the cease-fire. Simultaneously, Haniyeh promises to declare a third Intifada in six months.  Are they counting on a six-month calm to build up their military muscle? Odd timing.  April is a lovely month...
